Shadows Rising in Dun-Khazir

Return and Reflection

Edrik and Darin return to Dun-Khazir, shaken by their harrowing escape. They first seek out Orvik at his ironworks, informing him of Thrain's tragic death, which deeply affects the stoic blacksmith. Orvik, known for his gruff exterior, displays rare vulnerability, highlighting his close bond with Thrain. Orvik vows quietly to honor his fallen friend, crafting something special in his memory.

They proceed to the Adventurer's Guild, encountering Varian Tressk, the scholar from the Lightning Nation. Upon hearing their account, Varian quickly connects their discovery with obscure records he had uncovered in Volzareth's library, concerning an ancient and powerful entity sealed away beneath the mountains, potentially linked indirectly to the missing shard.

Mourning and Mystery

Darin, feeling responsible for the survivors' stories, visits the widow of Harran, the brave miner who sacrificed himself. The emotional scene reveals Harran's cryptic final words about a "promise," leaving both Darin and Harran’s wife wondering what he meant. They speculate it might relate to a hidden truth or unfinished duty Harran never disclosed.

Meanwhile, Varian and Edrik remain at the Guild Hall, deep in discussion. As they speak, a strange figure enters quietly—someone radiating an enigmatic aura, unseen by most. Only Varian senses the power and unusual presence of this newcomer, suspecting it might be a deity from the old legends, walking among mortals for reasons yet unknown.

Rising Tensions

The mysterious figure remains silent, merely observing, as Varian discreetly alerts Edrik to the presence. This creates tension and curiosity, compelling Varian to recall ancient texts about gods disguised among mortals during moments of great change.

The city reacts to the tragedy beneath Korrun Deep, initiating political tensions and suspicion between the miners, adventurers, and local leaders. Rumors spread, whispers about dark omens and the returning shards unsettle the community.

Alliances Form

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Varian, Edrik, and Darin form an informal alliance to investigate further, agreeing to keep their findings discreet until they understand more. Varian emphasizes the importance of understanding this mysterious visitor’s intentions, as well as unraveling Harran’s promise.

Orvik, driven by grief, secretly supports their quest, providing resources and forged weapons enhanced by the remnants of Thrain’s magic-infused belongings.

Unveiling the Hidden

Investigating Harran’s past reveals his hidden dealings—connections to an ancient sect dedicated to protecting relics from the lost Light/Dark civilization. The group's inquiries attract unwanted attention, leading to threats and attempts on their lives. It becomes clear that powerful forces seek the shards for their own ends.

Varian confronts the mysterious figure privately, who cryptically reveals himself as an observer—a god-like being of ancient power, neither ally nor enemy. He warns Varian of an impending calamity, triggered by humanity's greed and ambition regarding the shards.

Prelude to Adventure

Resolving to confront the looming crisis, the alliance solidifies their resolve, understanding that they must delve deeper into the history and lore surrounding the shards. Darin, driven by a sense of duty and responsibility, agrees to join their mission, determined to honor Harran’s memory and uncover his mysterious promise.

The stage is set for a larger adventure, with Varian, Edrik, Darin, and indirectly supported by Orvik, stepping into the shadows of history to prevent catastrophe.
